Primitive Skills for Post-Modern People


Learn how to be more self-sufficient in the wild with primitive skills your stone age ancestors used.

Join Salt Hotel and primitive skills expert, Aaron Webster, for this fun & educational outdoor adventure workshop where you'll learn critical survival skills: make arrowheads, build fires & shelter, identify flora and fauna for food collection, use projectiles (like a bow and arrow and other ancient tools), build a disaster survival kit, and more. You'll even go home with a completed arrowhead and fire-starting kit!

SCHEDULE

Friday, Nov. 4

  • 7 pm - 8 pm | Introduction & Skills Talk (Salt Pub)

Saturday, Nov. 5

  • 9:30 am - 1 pm | Know Your Way Around the Bay (half-day hike)

Introduction to some of the wild flora and fauna of the coast. We’ll look for clams, oysters, mushrooms, berries, seaweed, and other yummy things. Not everything will be available or in-season harvestable.

  • 1 pm - 3 pm | Fire Making & Shelter

More hands-on practice with fire making. We will discuss and demonstrate several methods. We will learn about how to build a fire that will light easily including choosing the site, finding dry materials, and arranging the pyre for quick lighting. Everyone will go home with a fire starting set.

  • 6 pm - 8 pm | Flintknapping (Arrowhead Making)

You’ll learn the basics of making an arrowhead. Nearly everyone will go home with a completed arrowhead. You’ll also receive some obsidian to take home, along with materials to make a flintknapping tool.

Sunday, Nov. 6

  • 9 am - 10 am | Building a Disaster Survival Kit

Aaron will dissect his own personal survival kit and talk about which items he chose and why. Emphasis is on building a kit that is inexpensive and uses many things you already have.

  • 10:30 am - 2 pm | Projectile Weapons

You’ll learn and safely practice archery. You’ll also learn how to use the atl-atl and dart (a weapon that predates the bow and arrow). We’ll also include a discussion and demonstration of bow-making and arrow-making.

GETTING HERE

We are 3.5 hrs from Seattle and 2.5 hrs from Portland, more if there is traffic, so try to get out of town early if you can.

REQUIRED GEAR

You will need to bring good rubber boots (extra tuffs or similar + wool socks recommended) suitable outdoor clothes (read layers) changes of dry clothes, a hat, rain gear, a camera, snacks, beverages and most importantly your sense of adventure.

TRANSPORTATION

You will need to provide your own transportation to and from your home to Salt Hotel in Ilwaco. There will be the option of ride sharing to outdoor adventures while at the workshop.

CANCELLATION POLICY

The class will be held rain or shine. Once the class is booked no refunds will be issued unless we are able to refill the space in the class. Hotel booking can be cancelled without penalty up to 24 hrs before the start of the class.
